People often ask me how they can apply the Power of Mortality to specific situations in their lives. Last week's Mindful Moment centered on the subject of threats and our fear of dying. In it, I suggested that the Power of Mortality could be used to overcome the fear of death. Most of the feedback that I received was from people asking me to elaborate on how to actually do this.
This is a pretty extensive topic and is covered in my workshop "Tapping Into the Power of Mortality" (which uses my workbook "The Mortality Manual"). But today I want to give you a brief overview of using the Power of Mortality to inoculate yourself against the virus of fear.
First, we need to understand why the fear of death is so powerful. After all, intellectually we all know that we will die one day. So where does fear enter the picture? I believe that one of the main reasons the thought of death evokes such fear is that we are afraid that we will die having left something important unsaid or undone. The real tragedy is that our fear keeps us from thinking about death long enough to discover what those truly important things are.
When it comes to understanding your true dreams and goals, what is needed is nothing less than absolute clarity. You owe it to yourself to become an expert on the topic of YOU. Yet how many of us have devoted time to ourselves for this kind of self-discovery? Probably not many. We don't stop and think about how to live our lives because we're too busy letting our lives live us.
Imagine for a second the peace that you would have on your deathbed if you could be absolutely sure that you had left nothing unsaid, nothing undone and had no regrets!! Well, the first step is to get clear about what you need to say and do. What is the song inside of you that needs to come out?
Next week I'll continue to explain some of the steps that we can take to use the Power of Mortality to conquer any fear - even the fear of death.
