I'm sure you heard all about last week's foiled terrorist plot in England.
Or was it foiled?
I believe that the ultimate goal of terrorism isn't really to kill a few hundred or even a few thousand people, but rather to paralyze millions of people with fear. And as of last Thursday, people are now suspicious of bottles of water, shampoo and toothpaste. I'd say that's a success for terrorism, wouldn't you? The threat of a catastrophe can sometimes be more effective than actually causing a catastrophe.
My question is: how much control should we allow threats to have over our lives? There is no way that we can possibly eliminate all threats. Whether it is terrorism, wars, bird flu, gang violence or unsafe drivers on the highways, there will always be threats to our well-being.
Why are these threats so powerful? Why is terrorism such an effective weapon? Ultimately it comes down to the fear of being killed. We fear being killed by an act of terrorism, an act of war, an outbreak of bird flu, a stray bullet from a gang fight or a drunk driver. So the answer then, is to do whatever it takes to eliminate terrorism, wars, epidemics, gangs and unsafe driving - right? Then we'll be safe!
Hmm...
Let me offer a different perspective. Perhaps what we need to eliminate is our fear of death. After all, even if we manage to live our whole lives free from terrorism, epidemics, gangs and unsafe drivers, each-and-every one of our lives will still come to an end. Even if we manage to avoid heart attacks and cancer, we will still die. After-all, dying of old age is still dying.
I feel that the most responsible thing each of us can do is to invest the time and emotional energy required to come to terms with our own mortality as soon as possible. As I've said many times before, doing so allows you to tap into what I call The Power of Mortality. This power allows you to live a life that is fearless, focused and regret-free. (To learn more, read my Mortality Manifesto.)
So... will accepting your own mortality put an end to terrorist activity? No. But it will change how you react to "threats" and will allow you to realize that there is a difference between taking responsible action to prevent a dangerous situation and overreacting to something that may or may not ever happen.
