Cycles
For me, the theme for this past week has been about "cycles". Everywhere I turned I saw the various stages of cycles.
On Wednesday evening, I found myself in a darkened school gymnasium with children performing on stage. The last time I was in that situation, I was the school child on stage and my parents were in the audience. Now it was my turn to sit in the audience and watch my son and his Jr. Kindergarten class singing their hearts out on stage.
It was a very profound reminder of how quickly things change. I still remember a play that my class performed in Mrs. Turner's Kindergarten class. I remember singing in various Christmas concerts throughout the years. And I remember performing in two different high school plays.
It's amazing. You are a child performing on a stage... you close your eyes... open them again... and you are in the audience watching your own children perform on stage. But of course the cycle doesn't end there...
Sitting in the audience with me on Wednesday was my wife and her mother. As I looked at my mother-in-law, I couldn't help but wonder if I would ever sit in a darkened school gymnasium beside my son or my daughter, watching my grandkids on stage. Life really is one big series of cycles, isn't it?
Also last week, my wife and I made a joyous trip to the hospital to visit some dear friends and meet their beautiful newborn daughter! As I sat in the hospital room and held this new little treasure who was less than 24 hours old, I was reminded of the other end of the cycle of life.
It made me think of a quote from Dennis Lewis in his book Natural Breathing:
"When we are born, our first action on this earth is to inhale. When we die, our last action on this earth is to exhale. From beginning to end, our life is one immense breath."
