This series of messages, titled "It's Not What You Think" is designed to highlight the fact that generally-speaking, our assumptions and predictions may sometimes be proven wrong.
As I mentioned in last week's message (Part 1), at the age of eighteen I was told by a cardiologist that I would be lucky to live to the age of thirty.
It was his understanding that he had sound medical evidence for making that prognosis. Based on 18 years of data that had been collected about my heart through my annual check-ups, he felt confident that my heart would not last beyond the age of 30. He based this conclusion on the presence of one of the major "uncorrectable" defects in my heart. (In total I have nine diagnosed, uncorrected defects.)
As you know, this prognosis was the catalyst that led me to contemplate the fragility of life and to ultimately discover the Power of Mortality™.
A number of years after I had embraced my own mortality, but before my 30th birthday, I sought the opinion of a different cardiologist. Since I had already come to terms with my own mortality, it was more out of curiosity than anything else. This second cardiologist informed me that "somehow" my heart had found a perfect balance between all nine of the defects in my heart. This is why I have never had surgery. This is why I have never needed any medications for my heart. And this is why I am closing in on my 37th birthday in March.
The moral of this week's story? Sometimes our perceptions, predictions and assumptions - while seeming to be based on solid evidence - can lack evidence which can only be appreciated by looking at the broader view of the full picture.
I want you to think about your own life. Think about your own perceptions, predictions, prejudices and assumptions. Now ask yourself if there is a possibility that you are missing some of the full picture.
Life truly is full of surprises and sometimes, just when you think you have it figured out, you discover that it's not what you think!
