As most of you know, I was born with multiple congenital heart defects, which means that my heart didn't form properly. This reality didn't have much of an impact on my life until I was eighteen years old. It was then that a cardiologist told me that I would be lucky to live to the age of thirty.
I'm sure that you can imagine how difficult it was to come to terms with that news! Imagine if someone told YOU that you only had 12 years left to live! What would you do with that information?
I spent the next six years trying to process that diagnosis. At first I saw it as a death-sentence. I alternated between feelings of anger and feelings of depression. For me, one of the toughest things to accept was that there was nothing that could be done about my situation. No medications, no operations and no change of lifestyle could do anything to add to my 30-year life-span.
During one of my more gloomy periods of despair, I thought to myself, "You know, with my luck, I won't even make it to 30. I could be hit by a bus tomorrow!" While it sounds overly morbid, that thought was the beginning of the breakthrough that led me to discover the Power of Mortality™.
No one knows how much time they will be spending on this earth. Life expectancy statistics are not a guarantee and no one is owed any specific amount of time. Any one of us could be hit by a bus at any time. Or, any one of us could surprise the medical professionals. Take me for example - I've now lived 20% longer than expected!
The moral of the story? Whether you have a terminal diagnosis or a clean bill of health - it's always better to approach life as a gift that you get to open one day at a time. Because life is full of surprises and sometimes, just when you think you have it figured out, you discover that it's not what you think!
