If you could go back and do something over, what would it be?
If you had to think about that question for a few minutes before coming up with an answer - congratulations - you are living in the present moment!
If, on the other hand, you could instantly recite a litany of past events that you would like to be able to change, then perhaps you need to read today's "Mindful Moment" very carefully.
When we find ourselves becoming preoccupied with regrets and wishing that we had a time machine so that we could go back and "fix" something from the past, it can quickly become very self-defeating and even depressing, since obviously there is no way to change the past.
Instead of trying to change the past, we need to learn the lessons that the past has to offer us and then (and this is the tough part) let go of the circumstances that brought us the lessons. All to often, we get so hung up on the circumstances (what we said or did or what we didn't say or didn't do) that we never learn the lesson - and so we are doomed to play out the same situation over and over again until we "get it". As George Santayana said: “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
Regrets can easily lead to paralysis in our lives. They can cause us to be so afraid of making mistakes, that we become indecisive and afraid to take any action until we are 100% certain that it is the RIGHT action. And of course, we can never have that assurance.
My concept of The Power of Mortality™ offers you a chance to live a life that is fearless, focused and free from regrets. Interested?
