After a speaking engagement back in March, I was talking with a woman who was fascinated with the physiology of my heart. She kept talking about it and asking questions. I wasn't sure why she was focusing on my heart. To me, the main message of my presentation was The Power of Mortality, since it applies to everyone. My heart is just my heart.
Over the course of our conversation, she introduced me to some of the ideas of the Institute of HeartMath. According to their website, "Since 1991 the Institute of HeartMath (IHM) has been dedicated to helping people find balance between their mind and heart in life's activities. Our work is focused in two main areas, research and education."
Since that discussion, I've read a lot of the books published by the IHM and I continue to be fascinated by their scientific discoveries about the role that the human heart plays in our daily lives - beyond simply acting as a pump for our circulation system.
In particular, they have three exercises that I feel can apply to all of us who are seeking to develop what I call "mindful awareness", but what might more accurately be called "heartful awareness".
"FREEZE-FRAME" is a technique designed to help you stop reacting to situations and gain a new perspective by focusing on your heart. It helps you manage the mind.
The "CUT-THRU" technique allows you to manage your emotions and eliminate what the IHM calls "overcare".
"HEART LOCK-IN" helps to improve the balance in your life and "regenerate your system physically, mentally and emotionally."
All three of these exercises involve focusing our attention on the heart, which brings us firmly into the present moment. The ability to manage the mind, manage the emotions and balance your life. How much better would your life be if you were able to do those three things, even for just one week? If you'd like to learn more, you need to read "The HeartMath Solution".
(Thanks for introducing me to these concepts Gloria!)
