Being Yourself

Listen to an audio version of this Mindful Moment

Last week I spoke at a high school as part of a retreat that they were holding for their graduating class. When I met the students I could tell that these young people were very stressed. The most obvious reason was that final exams are looming a few short weeks away and they all need to maintain their academic averages so that they don't jeopardize the conditional acceptances that have been extended by the universities.

But beneath the academic stress, there was also some emotional stress. Graduating means saying goodbye to one part of their life and moving into a new stage. In fact, the theme of the retreat was "change". Some of these students have been in school together for 12 years. There are some life-long friendships that are about to undergo a serious change as people head to different universities and colleges. There are also some high school romances that are about to face the same changes and challenges.

But thankfully for the students, the staff had organized the retreat as a full-day event. I spoke to them in the morning and then was invited to tag along for the afternoon activities. We all boarded school busses and headed to a nearby beach for an afternoon of outdoor events.

For me, the most poignant and touching part of the day was watching these students during their "free time" at the beach. As they played football, frisbee and chased each other (and their teachers) around with pails of water, they were living entirely in the moment. It was a beautiful sight! For those precious few hours, exams were irrelevant and the coming changes were a world away. They were just being themselves - and loving it!

When was the last time you did something like that? When was the last time you gave yourself a "retreat" and took time to just be yourself? Not your job... not your family... not your responsibilities... not your problems - just yourself? How long has it been?

What's stopping you?

Take it from me (and the students) - it's worth it!

ENJOY NOW!

Quote of the Week
