MINDFUL MOMENT
2006 01 29 - Great Cinematic Advice

Last week, I had a hot date with two beautiful women and one of them was a real babe!

Yes, my wife and I took our eleven week-old daughter to a movie! We are fortunate enough to have a theatre in our city that hosts "Stars & Strollers" days, which are special weekly showings of regular new release movies for parents with newborn children. The film's volume is lowered, there are diaper-changing facilities right in the theatre and no one will give you a dirty look if your baby cries during the movie. It's a lifesaver for parents of newborns. You can find out more here, Stars & Strollers or here, Famous Babies.

The movie that was playing last week was "Last Vacation" which is the story of a retail sales clerk who is told that she has a terminal illness and only three weeks left to live.

Although the movie is not intended to be Oscar material it had some great lines of dialogue. At one point, the character said: "You wait and you wait for something big to happen and then you find out you're going to die." Isn't that a great warning to all of us?

At the beginning of the movie we find out that she has a scrapbook called "The Book of Possibilities", wherein she keeps clippings and photos of all the things she'd like to do "one day". Although she is continually on a diet, she loves cooking and fine food, so there are photos of wonderful, rich foods and desserts and a photo of celebrity chef, Emril Lagasse. She also has brochures from global destinations she'd like to visit.

After she received the diagnosis, she sat alone in her kitchen looking through the Book of Possibilities with deep regret. As she flipped the pages she said: "I should have eaten that (about a rich chocolate cake). I wanted to meet you (about Emeril). I never got to Prague."

But my favorite scene comes close to the end of her three week timeline. She is looking in the mirror and she says to her reflection:

"Next time, we're going to laugh more,
love more, see the world.
We won't be so afraid."

Every morning this week, I want YOU to look closely at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself:

"THIS TIME, I'm going to laugh more,
love more and I won't be so afraid!"

ENJOY NOW!
