Earlier this week I saw a sign warning us that
there are
only 30 shopping days left until Christmas. It
seems that each year these "consumer countdowns" start
earlier and earlier. So doesn't it stand to reason
that with so much advance warning, everyone
should
have their shopping done in plenty of time? Surely
the malls are empty on Christmas Eve, right?
Right.
Procrastination is a way of life for many people.
We know that there is a deadline looming, but we
still assume that there will be "more time" to tend
to the things we need to accomplish before the end
of the deadline.
This is why I urge people to acknowledge, accept
and embrace their own mortality. For each and every
one of us, death is an unseen deadline. We know
that it is coming, but we like to tell ourselves
that there will always be "more time".
So let's start treating every day as
though it's
the "Christmas Eve" of our lives and we haven't done
ANY "shopping".
Let's act as though we only have ONE DAY left to
live. One
day to do all of the things that need to be done
and to say all of the things that need to be said.
Oh - and as long as we're pretending that it's
Christmas Eve, don't forget the cookies and milk.
Ho! Ho! Ho!
ENJOY NOW!
