This past week was Fire Prevention Week. My son's daycare had a visit from a fire truck and he came home with a flyer with the large bold title of:
"Plan Your Exit."
The idea is that, as a family, we should plan our exit routes in the event that a fire breaks out in the home. A great idea! I couldn't agree more. But let's think about this from another perspective.
How likely are you to have a fire in your home? Or your office for that matter?
And yet we prepare for it.
We have Fire Prevention Week. Schools will often take field trips to visit the fire stations so that kids can get a good look at all of the amazing equipment that is used to protect us from the dangers of a potential fire. We have smoke alarms and CO2 detectors in our homes and our offices have fire extinguishers and hoses mounted on the walls and sometimes there are even sprinkler systems.
We know that there is a possibility that we may one day be faced with a fire, so we educate our children as early as possible. Everyone probably knows the phrase "STOP, DROP and ROLL!"
All of this wonderful planning and preparation and prevention for something that most of us will never have to face.
"Plan Your Exit". As I looked at the flyer, I couldn't help but wonder what people are doing to plan their OTHER exit? Why do we give almost no thought to the fact that each of us will one day be exiting this life? This isn't just a possibility or a potential happening. This is a certainty. And yet what are we doing to prepare for it?
Surely preparing for the certainty of death is at least as important as preparing for the possibility of a fire? Along with "Stop, Drop and Roll" we should also be teaching our children how to "Acknowledge, Accept and Embrace" their mortality.
Have you planned YOUR exit?
ENJOY NOW!
