MINDFUL MOMENT
2005 04 24 - Enjoy Your Job!

I'm going to ask a question and I want you to think of the first answer that pops into your head. Ready?"

What is your favorite thing about your job?

Did you have a hard time coming up with an answer? Why?

Or perhaps you came up with an answer immediately, but the answer was something like: "weekends", "quitting time" or "lunch breaks".

If, like me, you are very happy with your chosen line of work and you find it rewarding and highly fulfilling - then congratulations! If you feel like you never go to "work" because your job feels more like "play" than it does "work" - I applaud you!

But if you're not happy with your job let me ask you something - why are you doing that job?

I know that we all need to earn money. I know that we all have financial obligations and sometimes we need to make sacrifices in order to provide for ourselves and for our loved-ones. But I also know the statistics:

  • The average person spends eight hours a day, (five days a week) at their job. (This doesn't even consider time spent commuting to and from work.)
  • That equals 2,080 hours per year. (Not counting any vacation time.)
  • The average person also spends between 6 - 8 hours per day sleeping, which translates to 2,190 - 2,920 hours per year.
  • Given that there are only 8,760 hours in a year, this means that the average person spends 31.6% - 35.6% of their waking hours at their job.

You owe it to yourself to ensure that your work adds to your enjoyment of life, even more than it adds to your bank account. Because at the end of it all - which is really going to matter more?

ENJOY NOW!
