2005 04 03 - Eulogy For the Living

Right now, the media is dominated by news of the death of Pope John Paul II. Tributes are pouring in from world leaders, people in the world of entertainment and ordinary people from every region of the world.

Why is it that we often wait until a person is dead before we express how much they mean to us?

I would like to propose a powerful and potentially life-changing exercise:

• Make a list of the people who are closest to you - the people you love most.
  
• Take the first person on the list and write out what you would say if you were asked to speak at their funeral.
  
• Be sure to cover everything - your fondest memories of them, anecdotes about your time with them, the things they did for you, and most importantly the feelings that you had for them.
  
• When you have finished, call the person and invite them to dinner.
  
• Share with them the "eulogy" that you've written for them.
  
• Then, move on to the next person on your list!
