HAPPY
NOW YEAR!
This "Calvin and Hobbes" comic strip originally appeared over
fourteen years ago, on December 30th 1990. Take a moment to read it
and you'll understand why I am bringing it up today.
The concept of a
new year is a rather strange one if you really think about it. Why do
we celebrate a new year and not a new month, new week or new day? Wouldn't
it be just as appropriate to "ring in" each and every new
day at midnight with streamers and party hats?
On December 31st,
most people vow, "next year will be better!" They resolve
to make certain changes in their behavior and pledge to stick to these
resolutions in the future. But as the cartoon points out -
"The problem
with the future is that it keeps turning into the present."
We can make elaborate plans for changing the future, but if we don't
take daily, mindful, present-based action, the new year will never turn
out the way we plan it on December 31st.
So remember that
whether you are talking about a new DAY, a new WEEK, a new MONTH or
a new YEAR - the results are up to you!!
Make 2005 an outstanding
year!
