We had a great visit with my brother Mike last weekend. He lives 2100 kilometers (1300 miles) away, so we don't get to see him very often. This visit was a very different one because I saw him in a new light. Funny, how you often don't really "see" the people you grew up with since you figure you know them already.

What struck me about my brother is that he has a lot to teach me about mindful awareness and living in the moment! He has always been this way. For example, while he was over, I told him that I was thinking of building a deck at the back of our house. In a flash, he went to my garage, grabbed two shovels and we started digging holes for the posts. Just like that!

He rode the 2100 kilometers to our home on his Harley Davidson motorcycle. When he left here, he was heading for the east coast, taking him another 1600 kilometers (1000 miles) from home. He has to be back to work in a month, but other than that he has no fixed schedule, no itinerary and he's comfortable with that! Mike has this fantastic ability to look at any situation for what it is and not bother wrapping it in judgments.

Mike is a corporal with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, a career that has taken him to many interesting, and sometimes troubling, places. He's done two tours of duty in Bosnia and served in Afghanistan. His photo albums are truly amazing - from the deserts and mountains of Afghanistan to the oasis of Dubai. From the hills of Bosnia, to the streets of Budapest. Whether he's riding the open highway on his Harley or digging post holes in my back yard, wherever he finds himself, Mike just accepts the situation for what it is and does what needs to be done. I truly admire him for that!
