MINDFUL MOMENT
2004 04 25 - Mindfulness Saves Lives

Last week a good friend of mind, Kathy Browning of Cancer Comfort, told me of a very frightening experience she had just been through. She wrote:

Earlier this afternoon, I went into my bank branch. When I arrived in the parking lot, there was a young man pacing back & forth outside of the bank.

A man was leaving the bank and the "pacer" approached him. I did not hear their conversation, but as I got out of my car, I overhead him say "No man, I don't think so". I attempted to walk by him, but he approached me and asked "Hey, do you have any crack?" Strange, but true. I replied with "No" and continued toward the door. He then asked if I had any money and by this time I was getting a little nervous.

As I entered the bank, I saw his reflection in the glass in front of me. He was following me in. There were no other customers in the bank & I headed for the teller I normally visit. I told her the guy was behaving very suspiciously and she said that she was aware, as he had been in the bank a few minutes earlier and left.

The man was standing very close behind me and I heard this voice in my head telling me to get out. I literally felt as though someone was turning me around & pointing me toward the door.

I turned to look at the man who had followed me in and he was perspiring, had this wild look in his eyes and had one hand in his coat pocket. I picked up my transaction and told the teller I would return later. I was almost frantic by the time I left.

After I got into the car, I heard my inner voice telling me to go across the street and call the police. I drove across the street to a store and told them I felt there was a potential bank robbery in progress and asked to use their phone. While I was speaking with the police dispatcher, she informed me that the bank alarm had just been called in. The police were already in the parking lot. The dispatcher thanked me for calling and told me I very well may have saved some people's lives.

I can honestly say that I believe I was guided to get out of that bank.

  • What if Kathy wasn't mindful and focused on the present moment?
  • Would she have been able to pick up on the inner voice that told her to get out?
  • When was the last time YOU were focused on the present enough to be able to hear YOUR inner voice?
  • What life-and-death messages do we risk missing in we are not living a mindful life?

When your attention moves into the Now, there is an alertness. It is as if you were waking up from a dream, the dream of thought, the dream of past and future. Such clarity, such simplicity. No room for problem-making. Just this moment as it is.
