MINDFUL MOMENT 2003 05 20 - YOUR Weekend? I hope that everyone had a great long weekend! I remember one particular long weekend, when I was in high school, some friends and I were off to see a concert and I was driving. We had a couple of stops to make before we arrived at the concert so I had everything properly scheduled. Once we got on the road, the cars in front of us were driving slowly and it looked like my schedule would be thrown off. In frustration, I yelled at the other drivers saying: "C'mon - you're wasting my weekend!" "YOUR weekend?" my friends kidded me. "Since when is it only YOUR weekend?" Feeling kind of silly, I played along and told them, "That's right - it's MY weekend and you are all just lucky to be a part of it!" Do you ever feel like the world should operate on YOUR schedule? Do you ever feel frustrated that things are moving too quickly or too slowly? I'm sure we all feel that way sometimes. It's human nature. This weekend I went to a conservation area west of the city with my wife and son. We had brought a great picnic and planned to find a shady spot to enjoy it before going for a hike around the area. Once we arrived at the site, we found a suitable tree with wonderful shade and spread out our blanket. As we were getting the food together, I realized that I wasn't fully enjoying myself yet. Upon reflecting, I realized that I was eager to keep things moving so that we could get on with the hike...once again I was scheduling my weekend away! This week is a short work-week for most of us. That usually means that we end up trying to cram five days' work into four days. But even on the best of weeks, many of us suffer from "not enough hours in the day" syndrome - at work AND at home. Let's try something new this week! Let's try living in the moment and giving 100% of ourselves to everything that we do without focusing on simply crossing off items on our "TO DO" lists. Start by making today the best day that you can make it - without worrying about tomorrow! And if we're lucky enough to see tomorrow, then we'll do the same for that day...and every day after!!
